Perfect Ten!

AYC sent a ten boat flotilla to this years 'Round the County Race sponsored by OIYC. An estimated crowd of 200 sailors got ready for the race at AYC Friday night dancing to the groove of Gertrudes Hearse. Saturday was an 0830 warning @ Lydia Shoal. A driving rain squall and 25 kt winds sent the racers riding a huge flood North to Patos. Wipe outs were the order of the day. A long reach up Boundary Pass and a beat to the finish. Nearly all boats were done by 1500. Saturday results revealed "Martha" a 90' schooner leading the way. The elapsed time record was in jeopardy.... Sunday featured more Southerly winds to 25 kts as the majority of the fleet swapped tacks up San Juans Western shore. A few brave mariners bucked the flood to the middle strait instead. Davidson Rock was the trigger for the kite run to the finish, for those that still had kites and halyards and assorted gear that they hadn't lost or destroyed Saturday. Pangaea 7th, Grafix 4th, Alakazam 11th, Seeker 11th, Celebration 12th, Crazy Ivan 5th, Teddy Bear 9th, Icon 4th, Grafix 4th, the only boat to bring home a trophy was skippered by my favorite tiller handler Stephanie! She drove the Rumpus to 15.7 kts under storm sspinnaker, drove through several standing waves near Cattle pass washing one crewperson off the weather rail over the cabintop, broached and cleared the tri-color off the masthead, smiled and sang along to the stereo most of the way, brought home second place to the Mighty Martha. BTW record was safe by 20 seconds...
