This Memorial Day weekend, the grand daddy of them all, the Swiftsure Regatta sailed out of Royal Victoria Yacht Club celebrated 70 years. 200 boats from Oregon, Washington, BC and beyond rafted together in front of the Empress Hotel in anticipation of a 9am start of Brotchie Ledge. I could go on but let's stick to the facts: 2011 NightRunner skippered by Doug Fryer 1st OA, 2012 ICON skippered by Kevin Welch 1st OA, and again this year Capt Fryer's 42 Custom 42 Perry designed cutter brought the AYC burgee home 1st! Not a bad 3 year average for good ol AYC! Mr. Fryer was honored at the pre race festivities for having completed 45 of these regattas. Also on board Night Runner were AYC members former commodore Jerry Vanderveen and current race chair Andy Schwenk. AYC also had the top scoring female skipper with Stephanie Schwenk and kids and neighbors placing first in the inshore race and 3rd overall. The race had it all with top winds of 20kts off Tatoosh Island near Cape Flattery to boats anchored within sight of the finish to keep from being pushed backward by strong curremts. This is a very special accomplishment for these sailors and showcases the quality of sailors around AYC.
