Swiftsure and stuff...

AYC sent a flotilla of yachts to the annual Swiftsure Lightship Classic yacht race this past Memorial Day weekend in Victoria, BC. Icon, Passepartout, Kymodoce, and Night Runner battled the elements in the annual race out the Strait of Juan de Fuca and back. For the first time in a long time AYC was not on the winners list though ICON made the podium with a solid third in the premiere IRC division. The winds were Westerly and the currents Easterly on the way out making for flat water and plenty of strategery for the naviguessers. Most boats got down to working jibs and a reef and tried to pick the shore with the best combination of wind and current relief. The answer will be borne out via the race tracker system and a few cocktails. The first boat to finish a Multihull named Dragonfly that is familiar to anyone that has driven I-5 through Everett and noticed a aboat with dragons painted on the hull at Dagmar's was done and at the safety inspection after covering nearly 100 miles in less than 12hrs! As the day gave way to night the winds just simply blew themselves out and the fleet began the drift with current routine. When dawn broke and the wind still failed to materialize a sgnificant number of competitiors simply opted for the iron jenny. Nonetheless the spectacle of Swiftsure weekend is not to be missed. Likely one of the best tests of crew, boat and afterguard preperations on the West coast and maybe nationally and beyond Swiftsure remains a challenge! In other news: Windermere Regatta is this weekend, either sign up or join in. This week Mark Dobie the Regatta chair, Eric Beemer the Race chair and Stephanie and Andy the PRO's will be busy with preperations. If you can lend a hand ashore or afloat please call or email with your availability.
