Snakes Breed in Anacortes

Trevor DiMarco and Dustin Johnson of AYC acquired a  Viper 640 to join Dan Holden's Wise Asp and Orsini/Johns' Kaa growing the local fleet to three.  Smiling from ear to ear, DiMarco/Johnson got a great deal on Hull #144 which had been unused in Seattle and sold last year to her second owner in Sand Point, ID.  Here too she was lightly used and went back on the market with some nice upgrades.  DiMarco/Johnson will have plenty of help getting her rigged and in the water from the crews of the other two AYC boats.  With two Vipers close by in Vancouver, BC and one coming up from Olympia, Viper 640s  will ensure their own start at this year's Tulip Regatta and other major buoy races sponsored by AYC.  Kaa is currently in southern California but will return to her home base following the  San Diego NOOD March 13-15.  It is going to be a fun season for the Snakes.

Seattle Boat Show

The Seattle Boat Show starts next week Jan 23- Feb 1st. Goto the website for all the details and special offers. Interestingly the show will be cancelled Feb 1st if the Seattle Seahawks are playing in the Superbowl which of course we know they will! If you like riding the rails, consider catching the train from Mt. Vernon. It will take you to King St. station just across the street from the show at the Century Link Field Convention Center. Senior discounts are available. There is a free shuttle from this show that will take you to the in water show at Lake Union, same ticket. Even our new mayor Laurie Gere was surprised last year when she saw how many vendors from good 'ol A-town are holding down a booth inside or a boat at the in water show. Free seminars go on all day from every topic from pets to my favorite title, "Anything can go up the Inside Passage." My father and I didn't agree on everything but we always had fun at the show and our annual ritual of a cup of delicious chowder across the street at F.X. Mc Crory's. Factory experts from all over the country come to Seattle as it is the largest on the West coast and the only 10 (or 9) day show in the country. If you have a heavy bag or jacket you would like to shed while you are inside you are welcome to park it at the Northwest Rigging booth!
In other news:
The Anacortes Small Boat Center meets each month at the AYC, third Tuesday at 1830. There is a movement afloat to start a local Etchells fleet for a small monthly fee. Imagine enjoying sailing March - October on a classic keelboat.
The club will be open for the Seahawk playoff game this Sunday 1200, Jan 18th. Bring a snack to share!
OIYC sponsors the Winter Classic, 'Round Shaw Island Sun. Feb 15th. This would be a good shakedown for the Girts Rekevics Race/Cruise the following weekend.
Colin Emsley is our new club handicapper if you are new to racing and need a rating or drop your wallet at the boat show and some sailmaker lightens it for a new sail contact him for all the details. Typically the measurements can be made at the local sail loft in about 15 minutes and a few simple questions regarding number of propellor blades and rudder type and you are all set.
Saturday February 28th AYC is hosting a clinic to bring local sailors or former sailors up to speed on the new rules. No formal certification but it would be helpful if you are interested in getting involved in he administration of our regattas.
No Snow on the hills, let's go Sailing!

Happy New Year

New Years Day featured a bakers dozen of AYC yachts on the water! Three generations of Bottles led the way on the Celebration and received the award for first spinnaker set of the year. 10 kts of wind and it was either storm jib or spinnaker, interestingly enough I remember a certain 'Round the County when the sail selection was the same only lots more wind! The new guy on the green Catalina 27 was out next followed by the army aboard Emoyeni. The Wind Warriors received the award for the reptile hanging from the spreader and Banagarang put on a show with sails from the Antiques Roadshow. The lovely Sherman couple parked the tri and took the helms of his and hers Lasers chased by Stephanie and her current pet Hershey. Also in the fray were a brand new Jeanneau 409, more Catalina 27's, and the usual suspects. The wind was chilly and many libations were tested to ward off any frozen assets. Meanwhile back at the club the big screen was on and snacks were snacked upon. The games were entertaining and if you need a new New Years tradition pencil this in on next years calendar. In other news Chris Roethle has taken the reins of the Girts Rekevics Foulweather Race/Cruise to Friday Harbor Feb 21st. As always the hospitality of SJIYC can't be beat and if you like a warm homemade meal after a day on the water don't miss it. As Girts would say, "Have fun, it's later than you think!"
