Town crier Richard Riddell was on hand to ring in a generous donation of $2050 for the Anacortes High School Sailing team. Jerry Reilly, Commodore of the Anacortes Yacht Club presented a check to Coach Trevor DiMarco and team members, at the December general meeting.
Throughout the past year money was collected in a ‘tip jar’ at the Yacht Club to support youth sailing. In addition to the $2050 from the tip jar, a spaghetti feed and an art auction netted a further $1700 towards the sailing program. “Club Members realize the future is with the young and we want to encourage them as much as possible,” said Mac Madenwald, past Commodore
In 2015 there were 18 High School sailors involved in a full schedule of fleet and team racing. The two-person co-ed teams sail one-design boats, called Flying Juniors, in local, district and regional regattas.
Support from the yacht club helps maintain the team’s activities, training and the purchase of dinghies. Coach DiMarco and Assistant coach Steve Orsini are both members of the yacht club. Opportunities to get out on the water on larger boats are available during regular club racing. The club also offers Junior memberships at very reasonable rates.
Anacortes has been selected to host the 2016 Baker Cup, a US National High School Championship regatta, in May 27 – 29.
